NMC Registration Process for International Nurses (2025

The NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) is the
regulatory body for nurses and midwives in the UK. If you're an
overseas-qualified nurse, you must register with the NMC to legally work as a
nurse in the UK.
✅ Step-by-Step NMC Registration
Process:
Step 1: Check Eligibility
To apply for NMC registration, you must have:
- A nursing
qualification equivalent to UK standards (B.Sc. Nursing or GNM)
- At
least 6 months of post-registration clinical experience
- Proficiency
in English language (IELTS/OET)
Step 2: Pass English Language Test
You must prove English proficiency through one of the
following:
IELTS (Academic)
- Listening:
7.0
- Reading:
7.0
- Speaking:
7.0
- Writing:
6.5
OET (Nursing)
- Listening,
Reading, Speaking: Grade B
- Writing:
Grade C+

scores from two test sittings (within 6 months), provided no section is below:

Step 3: Create NMC Online Account
- Visit
the NMC Online Portal
- Create
your account and submit initial documents like:
- Passport

qualification certificate

test results
Step 4: Take the CBT (Computer-Based Test)
- Part
1 of the Test of Competence
- Conducted
by Pearson VUE globally
- Covers
theoretical knowledge of nursing practice

multiple-choice questions, 4 hours duration

Step 5: Submit Full Application & Pay Fee
Once you pass CBT and verify documents:

Step 6: Receive Decision Letter
If successful, you will receive a Decision Letter
(sometimes called an “Invitation to OSCE”). This allows you to enter the UK on
a Tier 2 Health & Care Worker visa and take the OSCE.
Step 7: Come to the UK & Take OSCE
OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is a
practical test:

at an NMC-approved test centre in the UK
- Simulates
real clinical scenarios to assess your skills

Step 8: Receive NMC PIN & Get Band 5 Registration
Once you pass OSCE:
