NMC Registration Process for International Nurses (2025 Guide)

The NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) is the regulatory body for nurses and midwives in the UK. If you're an overseas-qualified nurse, you must register with the NMC to legally work as a nurse in the UK.

 Step-by-Step NMC Registration Process:

Step 1: Check Eligibility

To apply for NMC registration, you must have:

  • nursing qualification equivalent to UK standards (B.Sc. Nursing or GNM)
  • At least 6 months of post-registration clinical experience
  • Proficiency in English language (IELTS/OET)

Step 2: Pass English Language Test

You must prove English proficiency through one of the following:

IELTS (Academic)

  • Listening: 7.0
  • Reading: 7.0
  • Speaking: 7.0
  • Writing: 6.5

OET (Nursing)

  • Listening, Reading, Speaking: Grade B
  • Writing: Grade C+

? You can combine scores from two test sittings (within 6 months), provided no section is below: IELTS 6.5 / OET C.

Step 3: Create NMC Online Account

  • Visit the NMC Online Portal
  • Create your account and submit initial documents like:
    • Passport
    • Nursing qualification certificate
    • Employment references
    • English test results

Step 4: Take the CBT (Computer-Based Test)

  • Part 1 of the Test of Competence
  • Conducted by Pearson VUE globally
  • Covers theoretical knowledge of nursing practice
  • 120 multiple-choice questions, 4 hours duration

- Cost: £83

Step 5: Submit Full Application & Pay Fee

Once you pass CBT and verify documents:

  • Pay £140 application fee
  • NMC will assess your qualifications and documents

Step 6: Receive Decision Letter

If successful, you will receive a Decision Letter (sometimes called an “Invitation to OSCE”). This allows you to enter the UK on a Tier 2 Health & Care Worker visa and take the OSCE.

Step 7: Come to the UK & Take OSCE

OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is a practical test:

  • Taken at an NMC-approved test centre in the UK
  • Simulates real clinical scenarios to assess your skills

? Cost: £794
You must pass OSCE within 3 months of arrival in the UK.

Step 8: Receive NMC PIN & Get Band 5 Registration

Once you pass OSCE:

  • You will receive your NMC PIN
  • You are now officially a Registered Nurse in the UK (Band 5)

⏱️ Total Timeline:
